I have always collected rocks. I became interested in minerals, geology, gemology, and lapidary when my best friend and wife Laurie Roberts began making jewelry. It was a natural role to find and make our own gemstones. Happy to make yours too!

Larimar Quality and Buying Questions

I have compiled notes on Larimar quality and buying, which is available in my store for $10.

It can help answer questions and give you a general background that helps you to ask good questions and make good Larimar buying decisions:

Mineral Sources and Sourcing Integrity

The more valuable a mineral is, the more important it is to know where it came from, for several reasons including identification, avoiding conflict mineral sources, rarity, and valuation.

Where at all possible, I identify the source of items in my store. If I do not know, I will state "unknown", or, in the case of less valuable material, I may not mention the source. However, I will mention the source for less valuable minerals if I do know. For example, amethyst and jasper are common materials, but quality and characteristics vary from source to source, therefore, I will say, for example, if it is Brazilian amethyst, or Mexican jasper. I do not guess or assume where my specimens come from, and only say if I am certain.

Ethical Communication of Information through Images

There are many ways of doctoring images to make material look more valuable. Here's how and why I don't do this.

Like sourcing, the more valuable a mineral, the greater importance to preserve the integrity of information used to sell the material.

Bottom line, alterations can't ethically make the material look like a different value than it actually is. My photos put the material in its best light, but do not cross the line of misvaluation.

I alter my photos as little as possible: cropping and enlarging, and rarely, compression (removing the extraneous light and dark ranges to repair less-than perfect lighting).

Pieces are mostly photograhed wet and sometimes backlit. Although these are natural effects, the same ethics apply.

Free Shipping?

Of course, free shipping isn't free. Shipping costs can be hidden, and sometimes are, but the shipping company is always paid.

I like you to see the true price of the item, separate from the shipping charges. I control the prices of my items but not shipping prices.

Many of my items are inexpensive. I will not inflate prices to cover shipping. In my opinion this is a kind of hiding something from you, my customer.

Also, I won't force you to buy a certain number of items to get "free" shipping - I gladly refund excess shipping costs if you order multiple items. I charge a small amount, $2 per item, for the cost of the container, the packing material, a hand-written note, printing, packing, and handling.
